Three years of AI PC talk at COMPUTEX, and this year somebody is finally buying

Not because the machines got smarter. Because a reason to need them showed up: running models locally, for privacy.

The phrase AI PC has been around since 2024. For two years the question on the show floor was what it is actually for. This year there was a different answer: it runs on the machine, and the data never leaves.

The buyers are the ones under compliance pressure — accounting firms, law firms, hospitals. They cannot put client files into a cloud model, and they still want AI to organise documents.

Which part Taiwan is actually selling

Not the models. Cooling, power delivery and memory modules. The hard problem with local inference is sustained load: a laptop running inference for twenty minutes throttles. Half the booths this year were about that.

Several suppliers said the same thing: the orders are real, but customers want something that works end to end, not components. For companies built around contract manufacturing, that is a shift.

As for whether consumers should buy now, the advice on the floor was unexpectedly conservative: if you use cloud ChatGPT or Claude, the machine you have is fine.
