What a first live tournament actually costs: six Taiwanese players open their books

The buy-in is one line item. Travel, hotel, food and a re-entry reserve usually add up to 1.4–2× the buy-in.

We asked six people playing their first APT Taipei what the whole thing cost, from deciding to enter to walking out. The buy-in is fixed at NT$ 50,000. Everything else varied a lot, mostly on where they slept and whether they held money back for a re-entry.

The three who live in Taipei landed between NT$ 52,400 and 68,000. The three who travelled up from central and southern Taiwan needed three nights, and none came in under NT$ 79,000.

The line everyone forgets

The reserve. Single re-entry means you can buy in once more after busting. Four of the six busted on Day 1, and three of them re-entered on the spot — an unplanned NT$ 50,000.

The fix is simple: decide before you register whether you are re-entering, and set that money aside separately. Everyone who decided in the moment said afterwards that the decision was made on emotion.

{"q":"I told myself I would go home if I busted. Then I sat there watching everyone else still playing, and I walked to the desk.","by":"A player, first live tournament"}

The second common miss is food. Venue food costs more than outside, and a deep run means four meals in a day. NT$ 2,400 over three days was the median of the six.
